Scubo?

Is SCUBA my future?

Or, at least, my near future.

I've been pondering something that occurred to me while reading queenofengland's journal. What do I do if Med school doesn't work for me, or, even worse, I don't get in. I've also been listening to my aunt Pat talk about her life before law school, and her life during law school. She taught people how to ski in ( Read more... )

Do your taxes for 2006, finish the paperwork, etc so you can do the taxes for 2005, and use at least a big chunk of that money to finish the Advanced open water and get the Rescue diver course finished. (Reminds me... I HAVE to get all of my taxes finished this evening. Or else.) If you don't do basic, then finish the divemaster stuff. If you do go on basic this summer, maybe we could do the divemaster stuff together in fall ( ... )

Interesting suggestion there G mama - I had entirely forgotten about the 2005 taxes. The 2006 are done and submitted, so its just the 2005ers to go. The only advanced open water skill we need is the Wreck course - and I need to buy a new log and get it all set up, etc. After that its rescue - which may depend on other people's schedules a bit. I'm thinkin' that I can get a bunch of stuff done between my exams and the start of school, depending on the new start date. I don't know what the workload will be like come the May-June session, although I expect that my French class will be okay. If I am going to DM, then we're looking at wet suits, etc.

Hmm.... big thinkin's huh?

Oh, so if you didn't get your taxes done tonight, which I'm pretty sure you didn't, does that mean I get to spank you?

Come visit and get your dive master certification here. I'm sure it's 1/2 (or less) what it costs in Canada.

Actually, that's been a thought. Even if I don't end up doing a DM cert out there, I could certainly get work if I came to visit. Which, btw, would be the awesome.... If you and Peter could stand having a Farang or two about.

(did I spell it correctly?)

'Farang' is correct, although I also would have have accepted 'falang' (oh how I love going to Dairy Queen and getting an "Oleo Blizzard").

I'm still in Laos (or 'Rao", if you like) on holiday, but will be living in a town in Thailand called Thung Song for the next 5 months or so. It's pretty close to a lot of the major diving destinations: 2 hours from Krabi/Koh Phi-Phi, 5 hours from Phuket, 1 hour from Surat Thani - the launching point to Ko Samui, Ko Tao, Ko Phangan, etc.

Daily Queen ?

Will you be working in Thung Song?

I'm now thinking about working abroad as a dive master for a year. I'm about up to my ears in enough no money earning to last for a while, so I'm thinking one of those work abroad programs once I'm dive mastered up.

Out of curiosity, how much of my journal have you read in regards to my med school experiences? I got the impression that you read the entries around the time I was still in school and deciding on whether to leave.

From this post?

Actually, I've not done too much poking and proding around - I try to respect other's privacy. One of the original reasons why I wanted to get to know ya, even in electronic form was that you achieved that oh-so impossible - Med School, realized it wasn't for you, and then found a career to dedicate yourself to. I really admire your strength, your fortitude and frankly, your love of your nation.

One of the greatest struggles of my life has been trying to find a career with meaning and purpose. I've spent 14 years in post secondary education, earned several degrees, and yet, have found myself unemployable for anything other than a monkey job. Service is rather important to me, but service in an environment that actually has a positive goal, rather than obfuscating customer loyalties in an insipid effort to make a few more bucks. I've worked in a lot of media, and found the lacking too.

Actually, I have not figured out my career yet. I am unsure of this military thing, given the maturity level of those around me and some above me. I have been considering some type of Master's that will lend itself to a career in the government if I decide to leave after my commitment.

After I left medical school, I was surprised at how unemployable I was, despite being one of the top students from my university. I found myself working at a bank to make ends meet (highest paying customer service job I could find) until I was given orders to go active duty 2 weeks later.

Yeah, I can see that you'd be thinking about other careers. I'm in a weird boat - I've got an MA, but found myself really unemployable when I moved out to the West Coast. Granted, out here is more about whom you know that what you've got on your CV, but after 300 resumes out and two interviews, I was ready to try something else.
