So Dumbledore's gay all of the sudden. Honestly, why does it matter? Could Dumbledore not have been an amazing wizard if he was straight? And if he was gay all along, why didn't JK Rowling mention it earlier? Why wait until the books were sold and she'd already made more money that Jesus to out her headmaster? Don't get me wrong, I think it's ( Read more... )

I was just excited because her revelation confirmed my suspicions. I was glad that I'd picked up a vibe rather than was being all fan fic slashy in my head.

You must have been more observant than I because I never got -any- indication about Dumbledore one way or another. Thought he was asexual like most of the other teachers.

Well I do have that gay spidey sense ;)

Supposedly it's because there was mention of a girl in Dumbledore's past in the script for HBP and she wanted to correct the error. Supposedly.

Yeah, I heard something about that, too. I don't know, it just seems like if it was such a big deal for the character to be one way or another, she should have mentioned it in the books somewhere while she was still selling them.

It wasn't, which is why she didn't. She just wanted to clear up some confusion, and it's the kind of bomb you have to be sure will be generally well-received when dropped. There've been enough reports of homophobic parents banning all Potter from their children's lives at this announcement to suggest that J.K. might not have been unreasonable to hold back these details.

What I read was that she was doing a Q&A and some kid asked if Dumbledore ever fell in love. She said, "oh sure, that Grindewald guy" and then she recieved a 7 minute ovation.

She went on to say something like "damn, if I knew you would have been so happy I would have told you before. I didn't think it was that important"

She's revealed a lot of after-the-fact facts this way about characters.

Like, who married Neville, what Luna goes on to do for a living, what became of Hagrid's romance with the French giantess, etc.

I mostly agree with you. I think it's like midiclorians causing the force. If that's how you want it to work, fine, it doesn't really change anything but I do think it's an important enough part of the story that it should have been mentioned earlier or else abandoned entirely.

As for indications that Dumbledore was gay, I don't think there's a single unmarried character in the whole story that you couldn't find some 'evidence' they were gay if you really wanted to. Whatever, at least the illustrations of Gay Dumbledore are fun.

I'm going to make a t-shirt that says 'Dumbledore's Army: Don't Ask, Don't Tell Until After the Author Has Already Made her Bajillion Dollars.'

We didn't need to know who Gandalf was banging to love The Lord of the Rings. To me, it just smacks of a proverbial middle finger to the crazy slash fandom, as if to say "LOL I can make my characters gay too!"

Let the Dumbledore/"Trapped in the Closet" by R. Kelly videos commence!

Well, to be fair, she didn't say it until a kid at the event-thingy asked if he'd ever been in lurve with a girl, then she dropped the bomb and made a joke about having to pass a note to the 6th film's screenwriter.

And, c'mon - the first time we met the man, he was in high-heeled boots.
Did you really need more clues to form a suspicion than that?

I've watched too much Eddie Izzard to assume anything about anybody based on their shoes.
