c) Dude. You know that my father is a world-class spearfisherman right? Shooting each other is avoided by diving "near" each other but quite far away enough to not be shooting each other. Even longer range spearguns with multiple bands don't shoot farther than maybe 20-25 feet with any kind of velocity or accuracy. Go go friction. A pole spear like John described can't go much further than around 5 feet full extension unless you want to lose it.
Shooting yourself, well....yeah, you'd have to be pretty stupid and gimp to do this.
Uh, I've already speared 3 other divers and have two self-hits, so please calm down next time you start ridiculing people who have suffered complete freak-accidents while at the helm of a pole spear, my self-esteem is already fragile enough.
j/k, as O says, the range isn't that large, you've got to be pretty close and intentionally trying to shoot something to hit it. Maybe if you're in really thick kelp and are careless, but even then it would be a challenge.
I have a good friend who lives in AZ now. No idea if it's close by. Would love to visit that guy in the future and hey, beautiful city is cool too.
Hawaiian Sling, aka pole spear :) I can probably get a hold of just about any kind of spear gun if you want to try something a bit less rudimentary. Let's go diving at your awesome beach. I'll jive, jump, and roll to get in. Do I have to sign a damage waiver? Heh.
Also, my dad just recently moved his boat to Santa Barbara and I want to go up and visit him up there. Possible Orlando/Gump co-trip? Exciting.
Sedona is just south of Flagstaff. Both are about 100 miles almost directly north of Phoenix.
Visibility is going to get jacked by the swell arriving today, so it will still be beautiful, but probably not as crystal clear as when I saw it, but yeah, we should go sometime.
possibly... can you get time off, would you like to include channel islands camping... or does he go out there already to dive? If he does, it would be fun to go out with him, but I'm not going in the water up there, hace frio y muy tiburon (uh... tiburon-y?).
