Racism is a hot mess

Look at me playing devil's advocate by wearing a Yuri icon in this post!

I figured I'd rant about this subject as news reported by various South Korean news outlets and online American communities alike have been bringing it up and discussing it, bringing to light some interesting points of view regarding the topic of various 'isms' in South Korea. ( Read more... )

But only being able to marry only Korean or White definitely seems like ingrained hatred to me. Perpetrated by ignorance of course.

True, perception and all.

Lol oh yeah if only it was that simple. Since going deeper into sexism and racism and all that, it's so easy to see who's privileged and who isn't in the world at large.

I remember reading about Yuri (SNSD) being racist over at the Blasian Narrative, and was going to ask you about it. Now, after watching the video twice, will agree that Yuri was just trying to be funny. Hell, many people regardless of race tries to imitate the "ghetto black girl fingersnap dance", or being a thug- gangster. Yuri is only half to blame for her actions, the media (Hollywood) portrayes African Americans in a negative way. Though learning that she got teased for having a slight "tanner" skintone shows that the fact that Asian countries are no different from America. That whites will always be better than blacks. Come on S. Korea you can't believe everything you see in the media to be true about black people. Oh, lord don't get me started on blackface! I need to go to South Korea and give my beloved idols a black history lesson about blackface, mammies, sambos etc. This is why they created Misuda so idols can learn about other peoples' countries/race.

Can you link me to the post where it said that? I'm interested in reading the whole thing. The intent wasn't racist but as I said I'm not going to say that it's ok for them to do that (kind of humor where there in a homogenous country), though I did find her action funny. I just don't understand why someone would start hating her and crucifying her for that one moment, especially those people who weren't in the know until now. It's kind of annoying, in a way, that people have to have this info handed to them like that. You can't make conclusions about Yuri's character or anything just from that, when the people around her were just as ignorant.

Misuda

Oh, GLOBAL TALK SHOW! I forgot to mention that on here in passing. I watched the episode with SNSD on it and it was pretty funny. Christina from Milan was not to be forgotten.

Yeah, I'll link you the post. I have no clue either why, all of a sudden someone would want to pass judge her as a racist.

I have only seen parts of SNSD on Global Talk Show.

It's fucked up on many levels. It appears that in the 1990s, that if an African person was portrayed in a textbook over there, they'd usually have a bone in their nose.

I think it's because like I mentioned some of these video clips are new for a lot of people and suddenly a bunch of people are expressing their outrage towards them.

I can upload the whole thing for you since it might be down on the original link I got it from, or I could check on youtube..

When we had our talk on twitter about racism in Korea, I assumed I had enough information, yet I was so wrong. This definitely opened my eyes more and more to their culture, and it basically resembles my country's culture a lot, including the part where some comedians painted their face black in order to make fun of African people. All I have to say is that I completely agree with you. Take me for example I was born in Albania, this country full of stereotypes and 'isms' and yet I was brought up by my parents listening to Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Louis Armstrong and so many more that at least when it came to music, I didn't make any differences between skin color. When I began using internet our country began opening their minds, but yet nothing changed, just like in Korea. So yeah, I believe that if you want to change, really educate yourself, you CAN. Basically, what I'm saying is that many groups in Korea like SNSD, who are in their youth, carry a lot of responsibility on their shoulders, they should be the ones to bring ( ... )

Easier to continue following a certain stereotype. What's that about Europe being more "open-minded"? But we still shoot at Africans even though they didn't do anything wrong, and 'we' regard people of Romani descent as sub-human. It makes me sick. Plus Western European countries looking down on Eastern ( ... )

but it's just such a giant clusterfuck of wrong I'm not even sure what to say.

Basically. I'm surprised I even bothered but all of these thoughts have just been floating around in my head that it would be a waste not to chronicle them down.
