Getting antsy

Yes!  Another cold day.  I want these ice rinks to open.  The sloth of late fall/early winter is really chipping away at my sanity.  I'll put out a standing invitation to anyone who wants to go ice skating, but don't want to go by themselves.  I usually hit the Olbrich rink every night after work, and go to Tenney once or twice on the weekends, but ( Read more... )

You should wear padding if you are going to be attempting that hockey stop. I'd go skating with you!

Did you ever think of taking up speed skating?

I thought about it, but it's not a cheap endeavor. The boots and blades combined alone cost around 600 bucks, and then I'd have to join a club to practice, not to mention the skin suit. While I like the idea of going really fast on ice, my impression is that it's not something you can just dabble in.

Here's a link I was looking at today to try to improve my speed techniques - http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6045979856980149577&q=speed+skating&total=2559&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

Inline speed skating is tons cheaper although you don't get the atmosphere that olbrich offers. :) It would be fun to do in summer though. I could see you doing an inline speed skating marathon like the one at the end of that video. You might want to turn down the music on that video though fo schnizzle.

Actually, I do already compete in inline marathons. This past summer was my second year. The first year I only did a half-marathon, and I competed in a full marathon this past summer. I plan on racing in 3 this coming summer.

And yes, while I don't have to pay for rink fees, it's very easy to spend as much on boots, frames, and wheels as you would on ice speed skates. Me, though, I'm cheap and get by on a pair of rec/racing combo skates, shorts, and a t-shirt. Don't expect to see me winning anything anytime soon, though.

Well if you ever consider roller skating/blading in the summer, it seems a wee bit cheaper. Yikes 600 bucks. I suppose that those skates would have to be pretty heavy duty to withstand all the pounding on the ice that you'd do on them. If you ever have an itch to go really fast on roller skates in the summer, there is always inline speed skating or quad speed skating. My speed skates (quad roller) were beginner ones for 129. I'm sure the roller blades that the blading speed skaters on the speed team I practice with cost more, but the rink sometimes has speed skates that you can rent. We pay 3 bucks a practice.

You should see this little 12 year old on the speed team go. She's amazing. It's a lot of fun, good exercise and a few of the guys are always doing speed skate marathons around the state.
