I heard back from the publisher about my novel!

Rejected again! Oh, the suffering! It's not the rejection that bothers me so much as the possibility that I'm completely wasting my time. Instead of writing almost every night, I could be euthanizing my brain cells with television. It would be a lot less work, that's for sure, and in the end, I'd be too far gone to care about what a crushing ( Read more... )

You should totally emo it up. Hold the back of your fist to your forehead. Don a homemade cape and swoosh around your room, lamenting loudly. Offer whiny monologues to one or more poorly defined personal muses. Rue the fact that you have no nepenthe with which to soothe your inner spirit and bring blessed forgetfulness and oblivion.

Then suck it up, homo, and try again. Failures and crushing defeats are what's gonna build an awesome Wikipedia biography under the "early life" heading. Otherwise, you're like.... Britney Spears.

Relish your days as a tortured artist, for one day you will be successful, and other lit snobs will look down upon you if you haven't "paid your dues".

emo, goth.... all just different sides to the same "I got picked last every time for dodgeball"-sided dice. Besides, facts have never gotten in the way of a good Looeeee post, and there's no reason they should start now.

What have you been up to lately? You've been quiet! I figured that maybe you were involved in some crafty plot to - (entry aborted as MI5 agents kick in my door and begin interrogations)

You don't get picked for dodgeball, it's every man for himself.

I hated that game. I always just let them take me out early so I could go sit down.

Okay, I'm biased. I like emo kids and don't usually care for goths. I remember originally, a goth was one of those weirdos with a dark personality that happened to wear a lot of black and burn candles. They were kind of cool. Kind of like a burn-out only they wore black. OG, the original goth. ;p

I've been crocheting and slacking as usual. (Email me if you want to see pics -- of the crochet, not the slack.) Also, I turned 30, which was actually quite nice.

Don't get discouraged! Read this. (Because I know you didn't when I first mentioned it.)

Dixon included this writer in his Fantasy Lit. course, and her books are considered classics now, even though she's still writing them.

You'll find a publisher. The book is good. Someone will see that. Save your rejection letters and someday you can put them on your website with the same sense of generous benevolence that LeGuin uses in her comments.

those financial "experts" who attempt to make a living from writing career or investment advice without previous fame or great wealth are surely to be disregarded even if they have been fortunate enough to succeed.

would you rather have your writing read by millions but not make a dime from it or make a comfortable living from it but receive no acclaim?
