Dogs feel sorry for themselves, but only in front of people. Which suggests that the purpose of suffering is to manipulate others. But like laughter, it becomes a habit, and thereafter needs no audience but ourselves. If only that would make it less real.

It's a good quote, but the character in the movie is quoting D.H. Lawrence. Since VM is a poet himself, he would probably not like taking credit for someone else's work.
