If you just got a Breadmaker and are trying to figure out what to do....

For Hez and anyone else who just got a breadmaker for Christmas.

  • Bread flour is expensive.  Skip the cost by purchasing Vital Wheat Gluten and adding that to all-purpose flour: 1 tsp. of gluten for every 1 cup of flour.
  • Weigh your flour rather than using measuring cups.  That way, whether the flour is densely packed or sifted shouldn't matter.  You ( Read more... )

I buy bread flour for a couple of dollars per kilo at a bulk food shop nearby. In the end I'm making bread for 60c a loaf or so.

I'm in Australia, so your mileage may vary.

My pointer - read the whole recipe first and put the ingredients in the breadmaker in the order the recipe lists them (usually wet ingredients followed by dry).

Make sure your yeast is good.

Check the kneading dough every so often and scrape unkneaded bits out of the corners if neccessary.

I've had a breadmaker for over 4 years now and I LOVE it. :)
