Why do people say "no pun intended" when the pun was clearly intended?

Hahah I'll admit I chuckled while reading her explanation and your reaction. My dad makes terrible jokes sometimes along those lines and just gets this "oh dad, really?" bemused look from me.

It's because puns are so great that only really awesome people (like myself) are actually allowed to use them. When not-as-awesome people come up with puns, they say that so that they don't get arrested by the awesome-police.
