art or elitism

I go to school to discuss why "performances" like this are considered apart of the art realm:

I think it's disgusting, but the only gratification I will recieve is when when the guy in the front row gets into a fist fight with another classmate. I know it will happen, I just know it.

john cages ideas are actually really rad...sometimes his actual productions, and those of his students are hard to grasp or bear if its not your kinda thing...but their philosophies are really rad i promise.

which is exactly why my professor used this as an example, as well as rauschenberg's solid white paintings. I get to listen to all of the same arguments everyone has heard about art and what exactly it means to them a million times on end, and the only noteworthy thing he said was the quote "art is a word the white man uses to make himself feel more cultured."
