I can't remember laughing this much for a long, long, LONG time.

Was given this link: http://www.rinkworks.com/dialect/ via a mail group. It turns text on websites into dialects such as Cockney, redneck, etc. And... it WORKS!! Just sent it the URL for an article I wrote, and have been sitting here with tears in my eyes at the cockney version ( Read more... )

OMG. It was partly my choice: the first URL (Web site address) I could think of offhand (and that I have memorized) is that of my workplace, a purely respectable Holocaust museum ( ... )

LANTRA (which you MUST know) was my first listserv e-forum, back about 2-1/2 yrs ago when I first started all this e-corresponding. It remains in my mind/heart the Mother of All Lists. It took me a long time to get over being dazzled by the brilliance of some of its participants and their writing, and likewise feeling thoroughly intimidated and inadequate to participate. Of course I eventually got over it -- partly thanks to some furtive offlist approaches (by me) and kind encouragement (by wonderful LANTRAs) thus received.

Well, it was on LANTRA that I first encountered a Dialectizer, though it was for individual words & phrases. "Swedish Chef" was what was featured, and naive me thought it was the exclusive cleverness of some LANTRA folk.

Only recently did I find - when (brace yourself) I was Web-searching info on Scandinavians related to the smuggling of Jews from Nazi-occupied Denmark to Sweden in that daring (and successful!) 1943 clandestine rescue operation- that the Swedish Chef [bork! bork! bork!] was a creation of ( ... )
