Have not seen too much squee about this episode, so I clicked with relief on your review and found myself nodding along wholeheartedly. Like you, I thought the Bobby/Ellen affectionate crankiness was perfect, and I loved the details they had fun with - all the Celine Dion stuff epecially. Heh. As well as practically everything out of Balthazar's mouth.
And yes, our Cas is lying badly, ain't he? All being set up for some primo Dean angst, one hopes.
I'm sure I'll understand some of the criticisms when I finally get a chance to read some other reactions and see the non-squee! I kind of like having a delay, though, so I can just bask in simple pleasures like SAM'S FACE for a bit.
I liked it! I've been waiting to see more of Cas's regrettable things for a long time, Bobby/Ellen was a lovely entry in the exhibits of possible relationships between hunting and domesticity the season is working through, Sam and Dean were being quietly, undramatically brotherly -- IT'S THEIR DEFAULT OPTION AGAIN AT LAST, OMG -- and I like the shift from last season's obsession with personal destiny to the whole complicated mess of chaos and fate they've got going.
I decided it's probably best for me to just add "yes! this!" to everyone's comments in this thread. Boys being brothers and we can take it for granted>,! After how many years? Doesn't get much better than that, although I kind of hope it will.
And I want to know how to make bread pudding out of stale pudding and bourbon!
Oh my godddddddd the pudding is so good! And remarkably easy. Short version: take a ton of stale bread, tear it up and soak it in milk. Beat up eggs, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and raisins-soaked-in-bourbon, mix them into the milky bread. Pour it in a buttery dish, stick it in the oven. In the meantime, whip up some butter-and-sugar-and-bourbon sauce on the stovetop. HAMAZING.
Sam's FACE!!!!! Both their faces were DEEEEELIGHTFUL in many places, the lighting was GOOD to them unf and I love Sam's green shirt.
Shallow squee moments: Sam sidling closer to Dean on the bed, Dean grabbing at Sam's arm when the dogs come at them, sleeping together in the Impala, talking about their dreams, OMG.
THERE IS ANOTHER PERSON OUT THERE WHO LOVES SAM'S GREEN SHIRT.
This makes me very happy. It looked so good on him. Though of course he wears plaid most of the time even though it really isn't the best look for him because Dean wears plaid and Sam is imprinted like a duckling.
Vertical stripes are a good look on him. They enhance the broad shoulders to narrow waist thing. Whereas the boxiness of plaid doesn't accentuate his figure as well.
But it's OK because the loving Dean bit with the plaid accentuates his figure in a higher dimension.
