Brit seriously seconding 5. I live in a two bedroom house, and my storage space consists of some space under the stairs where I keep vacuum cleaner, brooms etc and a tiny built-in wardrobe. This is fairly typical.
And really, bring the minimum of clothes. Primark is really, really cheap and British clothes are probably more suited to British weather.
Can your uni provide somewhere to live at least to start with? Foreign students may get priority in halls (dorms) but uni may also own houses which will be less risky than the general lettings market. They may also be able to advise if there's a local bank branch used to their students.
1. The first time I lived here as a student I got one at Bank of Scotland (since merged with Halifax). Now I bank with NatWest and the Co-op. It is a lot harder to open a current account here as a foreign student, which you might have experienced previously. If you use a major US bank, check if they have a relationship with a UK bank (RBS owns/owned at least a few US banks, for example
