I feel that perhaps this romanticizing of cigarettes fails to examine or take into account their highly addictive nature. "We" smoke because it is compulsory.

Kevin, you must know that I thought this was simply hillarious and ridiculous, I smoke because it feels good (and now I'm addicted) but it's wonderful to hopelessly liken it to fire and gods.

I actually just read the book that quote was from on our trip to Oregon. It had its ups and downs, but definitely worth a read if you have the time.
