Piqued is from French, meaning to prick. You prick an interest (kind of like a bee sting, maybe, in that all of a sudden you notice it?), you pique an interest. Peaked, as near as I can figure, means that something has reached its highest point and is now getting lower.
Incidentally, in cards, the suit Spades is called Pique in French. La Dame de pique--the Queen of Spades (or the Black Lady?).
