I tried to reply to your question about the mattress, but it wouldn't let me. See response below:

We just got one of those foam toppers for our mattress and I gotta say, I hate it. It's going back. I have a really good mattress, - It's a Chiropedic. I really like it but we thought we would try one of those foam things. Well, it makes the bed entirely too soft for me. Our mattress is really firm and that's how I like it. If you like super soft, then foam is for you.

I've also heard a lot of good things about the SleepNumber bed but I've never tried one.

I also second the mattress pad you wrap around. Good Luck
