Oh, he just gets more adorable every single day! I'm sending him kisses eastward.
I'm so sorry about the suckage. This is one of those times when I hate to have a friend that lives so far away. I'd love to take you out for a drink and/or chocolate.
My personal journal is 100% friendslocked. I know that it doesn't necessarily mean any kind of privacy is guaranteed, but I figure it's a deterrent for drive-by gawkers. And then I have a separate journal for the fic, which is unlocked. It seems simpler to keep those lives apart.
He is a terribly cute individual. And even better in movie form.
I think your solution makes a lot of sense. The problem is that I have a fannish identity to maintain here--I can't strictly segregate my fangirling to Somewhere Else. Certain aspects of it, maybe, but since I think publicly about fandom as my real self, I have to have an online place to do it. And, having a real-name LJ is protection against certain forms of wank, from what I've heard. (Forgive the intentional obscurity, but you know what I'm talking about.)
I wish I had friends I could go drinking with out here...unfortunately, my life isn't really arranged like that. :/ Thanks for the hugs, though.
I still love that picture. he may have been boating, but he'll never, ever know :-P
The majority of my journal is f-locked, for two reasons: the first being, um gene. not just gene, but one of his friends totally LJ stalks me, so I'm kind of careful about the details of my life that are dissected publicly. (at the same time, I link my okcupid, and facebook, and myspace, and none of those are locked) The other being that I use a lot of different filters, and obviously those things are locked. I like filters. It keeps people I want out of my business out of my business, or gives me privacy on situations that I feel like I need it on.
I'm sorry about the suckage. You know you can both call me at any time day or night if you need to vent, kvetch, or otherwise have someone to talk through stuff with. <3 and ((hugs))
Yeah, Gene's an issue that, thankfully, I have no parallel to. And your filters are a thing of genius, frankly. Really, for me, it's all about keeping info that might fuck me professionally away from public search--i.e., when you Google me, you might eventually find this journal, but you don't find anything else. (OK, and I just googled myself, and...amazingly, 100% of the hits for my full name are me, but 0% of the hits for my first and last name are. Also one of them gave me a heart attack until I realized that it wasn't me they were talking about. #2 if you run it.)
Kate definitely might need to do some kvetching. You around tomorrow?
I have *never* gotten to my LJ by googling myself. trufax.
I will be here ALL DAY tomorrow, lol. jase doesn't have school (obviously) and we're not bothering to take him to daycare. plus, i haven't talked to you guys off the internets in weeks. listening to some kvetching from YOUR end seems more than fair ;-)
Thankfully for most people, they don't have a gene parallel. his friend who LJ stalks me is a little weird, though. some random dude I've never met who lives in Australia, and occasionally will mention something in conversation to gene that he could only have read in my LJ. weirder than weird.
LOL, I had to google you, reading this, and I googled you with the full ERW, and it was all you, I think, and then just EW, and none of them were you, and the second one was soft-core porn, and I almost peed myself laughing at the idea of you getting into that.
Also, I have like, twenty filters, lol. most of them are to avoid people from knowing I'm talking about them, though. (see: drama filter)
The thing about LJ is that this is where contemporary media fandom happens, and, if I keep doing fandom studies, I have to have a presence here that's a professional one. But, I agree, LJ is much better for personal things than professional ones. (Although--LJ filtering allows for a lot more subtlety than wordpress, from what I've seen.)
I'm keeping FB very, very professional; I'm actually using it a lot for research, when I can't find people's contact info another way. And I don't mind maintaining multiple online presences, since I honestly spend all of my waking hours online at this point, it seems.
I see your point about the fandom thing. I hadn't really thought that bit through so much, since I'm not involved. As far as LJ vs WP filters, you're probably right - I've never filtered anything on my WP blog because I don't have to. (It's purely cooking and gardening, whereas here is much more personal.)
Perhaps the answer is to either super-filter stuff about family on your LJ account or to start a separate LJ/WP/whatever blog for your personal stuff. That way, you can keep yourself on LJ for the fandom research, and you won't lose the "brand" you've already built for yourself with this sn (since I assume you've participated quite a bit already under this name).
One: Xander? *dies from the cute* Seriously. You and Kate have a gorgeous little boy. <3
LJ: I lock the shit outta all of my online haunts. I've taken a long and messy path the past oh, say, ten years or so, and I play my cards (online) pretty close to the vest. Aidan's biological father has bred a whole host of stalkers: his mother, his girlfriend, etc., so I'm insanely protective of the privacy of my children. I have rarely have the kids as a default pic on any site, and they are never in my icons here.
I'm all for multiple online presences, though. In a way, I think that's the safest way to play. My fbook has about a tenth of the info my lj does. I need to know who has inside access to my life at all times. I'm sure that sounds a bit paranoid, but that's just how I roll.
Sorry about the suckage, lovely. I'm seriously ready for this winter to be OVER. Whatever it is, I hope it all resolves quickly and easily for you.

(And either and/or both of you are free to call and talk whenever you need to. I assume you know this, but I like to reiterate. :) )
