Some thoughts on DC fashion

1. On my way to school this morning, I saw, on a single block, seven guys all dressed in identical pleated khakis and blue oxford shirts. They looked like some sort of Hill staffer gang ( Read more... )

I want to add a caveat which is that shorts on old dudes are ok, if they are also wearing white socks pulled all the way up. My dad mows the lawn in a little plaid shorts/white socks ensemble that is pretty fresh. He also has some amazing 70s cutoffs that are really extra wrong. But you know, it's Dad, what are you gonna do.

Nice Freudian slip about the baseball hate.

The other fashion rule is that when guys move to NYC, their pants get more fitted over time. It's usually only detectable year by year because it's not like they are buying new pants until the old ones wear out. Oh and then when they go home to visit, their friends are like "Yo, nice fag pants."

totally right on the Freudian slip, and the pants getting tighter. I've thought about getting some skinnier jeans, but I'm afraid I may be too old and, em, full bodied for them.

oh and re: seersucker, do you know this guy lord_whimsy? He is really great. I think that seersucker is the province of the really traditional (i.e. I saw 3 guys wearing it at Galatoire's in New Orleans last August, in fact all the guys in the restaurant more or less minus the waiters) and also the freaky, like people will incorporate it into their summer pirate wear. There is just not much middle ground. And that is because it requires commitment.

i agree with an awful lot of this...

i never wear shorts, or shoes that show my feet (unless i'm parading around the house in a pair of flip flops that i only bought because i spent a summer at an artist's residency out in the woods where no one gives a shit).

i think the tight jeans thing can reach a point of no return too... i mean, i'm certainly not in favor of baggy jeans, but if you look like it took you more than thirty seconds to get them on, you are most likely some emo-shmuck.

HOWEVER, i will say this: girls with good style can rock shorts. it's not particularly common, but when handled correctly, i can be really into it. it's like "fuck you, i'm keepin it real" style...

Bike shorts though...
esp. on Ivan Basso...
sigh.
(sorry... had to...)

and I can honestly say that I am one of the first persons in New England to don shorts come weather above 55 degrees. I loathe being hot in any form... this comes from 6 years of living in sweltering/horrifying Florida.

and I wear flipflops pretty much from April till October. I'd like to think I am making my feet germ-hardened on the vile streets of Boston.

Man, I do not understand short hate at all.

I figure, dress comfortably.

Now some people really believe in looking great, and they are a gift to the world. Some people do not have the time for that. If you do not, don't let the people who judge you on clothing get you down. Make adjustments for necessary professional development. But if you want to wear shorts, wear shorts.

And wear glasses if you need them too.
