For the truly nerdy

So this is my latest in internerd obsessions - the Nurse with Wound ListApparently, the cover of the first Nurse with Wound record was just a list of band names. Some music geeks have copied out all the names, and built wikipedia pages for many of the bands listed. Some of these bands are classic music nerd staples (Amon Duul II, AMM, Crass) others ( Read more... )

I love seeing things like that, it makes me realize I don't know nearly as much about as music as I sometimes think. Surprised to see Sally Timms on the list.

yeah, its a strange list, and I don't think NWW took it as seriously when they made it as people do now, but it is a neat tool for finding new music (which is exactly what I need since I only have 2,799 unplayed song in my itunes).

I've been meaning to look this list over myself. I'll let you know about the few things I'm actually familiar with on here, besides the super obvious Captain Beefheart type stuff.

Art Bears - not impressed
Chrome - interesting but not sure if it's my cup of tea
Comus - hate them with an unholy passion
the Pop Group - read REALLY interesting stuff but haven't heard them
PiL - an obvious one, but if you haven't listened to the first album you really need to
Whitehouse - having read about them, I don't think I could handle the disgustingness

Interesting intersection of two things on this list: Robert Wyatt appeared on an album John Cage did collaboratively with another musician (I think it was called Voices and Instruments?) doing a song called Experiences No. 2 that is based on an e.e. cummings poem and it is one of my favorite recordings ever.

the first PiL record is really really good. I've never heard Comus, why do you hate them?

And fuck whitehouse, that shit isn't cool

I am totally into the first PiL record - I just heard it for the first time last year (embarrassingly), but I got really stuck on it for a few weeks. Some low points, but overall excellent.

(i'm bored and at work, and this list kept me busy for a while... apparently i have similar taste to nurse with wound?)

anyway, algarnas tradgard is an interesting prog/kraut sorta hybrid, kinda like an amped up popul vuh with more chord changes. i only own one ash ra tempel record and it's boring. chrome is a cool band that's kinda like a noise-rock take on hawkwind or something. gotta disagree with the above comment and say that comus' first utterance is fantastic (but not for all tastes). sorta halfway between king crimson and the incredible string band-- but honestly, there isn't a good way to describe it. "music to slay dragons" to is more accurate. cromagnon's orgasm is probably in the top five weirdest albums i own, and i own some doosies. highly recommended, but you won't wanna play it too often. jean dubuffet is an "art brut" painter/sculptor, and i didn't even know he made music. gila and guru guru are both serviceable krautrock bands. guru's ufo is pretty good. international harvester is an offshoot of the bands parson ( ... )

i have a lot of this stuff, and i'm "dschank" on soulseek. but i'm rarely on there. i could also send you a record or two through pando if you have that, if you want. google "pamdo" if you don't know what it is. it's worth a DLoad.

anyway, yeah, i'm bored at work, and i only have on-the-job internet for a limited amount of time, so i figured i'd dive into this. that sorta psych-folk-70's-freakout stuff is where i've been at for a few years now, and a lot of that stuff is a lot more accessible because of file-sharing, etc. i download a lot of weird seventies records. sometimes it's because i feel sorta bad about filesharing bands that are still around (i also think fileharing is awesome too? i dunno, i'm conflicted. conflicted and addicted). sometimes the lj community psych_exchange shares some records of this sort. it's not updated very often though.
