We're considering investing in a higher-end digital camera for our trip to Africa. I know several of you have done research on cameras as of late... any help you can give me?
Another vote for the digital Rebel. I studied all the various digital SLRs and drooled over the Rebel for months, thinking it was a distant, penny pinching dream. Bill and his dad surprised me with it for Christmas and I LOVE it

OK, reading this discussion helped me realize that the second camera that we took to Africa was an older model of digital Rebel. The one that Matt didn't know how to use properly ;) So I guess while it is a big camera, it is 1) bigger than the simple "point and shoot" PowerShot that we had, 2) even with automatic setting you need to test it out and know how to use it properly - which isn't an issue for you since you'll have it before the trip, but was an issue for us since the first photo we took on it was already in Africa and we had to way of downloading them and checking them out to make sure we're using the camera properly. Rebel was also the one that we messed up with the anti-bug spray ;)
OK, I was at a friend's birthday on Sunday and they had a new digital Rebel which I got to use. It is SWEET, I felt like a pro photographer taking pictures.... and I'm sure learning the settings and how to use it won't be a problem for you guys.
But - the new model of the camera does have the same plastic handles on the sides as we had on the old Rebel camera that we borrowed. I did a search on the web for "deet damage plastic" and got a bunch of hits so I'm fairly certain it was indeed our Jungle Juice 100% DEET mosquito repellant that ruined the plastic handles on the Rebel camera that we took to Africa.
I just bought the Canon Rebel XT for my husband for his birthday. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet but am dying to. I was very well recommended by the people on cnet.com. I also wrote my wedding photographer to ask for recommendations for an amatuer and he too recommended the Canon Rebel. I bought it from amazon.com for $779. There was a $100 rebate floating around but I think that might have ended already.
We have a little Canon that Steve wanted for our honeymoon... it's small and easy to take anywhere... he didn't want to bring the big giant one he has.... and it took really great photos... we even blew some up to 12x18 and they're crystal clear!
