I love this whole thing.

So like Laura to know that people would always be watching her, out of curiosity, if nothing else.

I love the way she found things to do, and was sort of secretive about them, and by the time Bill came back, every bit of it made sense to her and their relationship.

I adore Kara and Lee getting together, and Willa and Zacharya are perfect names. The little bit about the babies using the rings to teethe on is just spot on.

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement (and guidance!) I think having been in the spotlight after decades of not (I wouldn't remember me either) she'd really process that kind of connection and if not appreciate it, understand it.

Babies and rings, right??

Yes! I think it's because the rings feel just right against their gums, whether the metal is warm or cold.

Beautiful!
I love its tightness. Every word has value and adds a layer, an emotion, or helps the story along.
The mixture of close emotional impact with the more detached ancient story feel works very well.
It gives the reader time to breathe, to relax, and makes the next emotion even more powerful.

Thank you so much for the wonderful beta-ing, which is why it's so tight :-) Excellent help indeed! I love that you could feel the emotional pauses and that those worked for you--I do love the detached ancient story style of writing now and then.

What a richly re-imagined vision of New Caprica. It was wonderful to have all those details about what life would have been like. The passage of time is its own presence in the story, not an easy feat to depict. Laura and Bill are mythical here and yet they never stop being wholly human.

Beautiful!

Thanks so much! I'm thrilled you felt the passage of time was a real presence--that can be a bear to write and I wondered if I was cheating with the occasional "Time passed." The original gave me wonderful images of how the settlement would develop in ways I hadn't thought of before, that there would be haves and have-nots even on NC.

A/R, our mythical humans :-) Lovely (and so true) thought!

I loved this from the first paragraph. Of course people were watching her and of course she'd be aware of it and the fact that she cared less and less about the gossip over time, in fact used it to her advantage, is so very Laura.

This description of NC, so real and painful, seems like a perfectly reasonable extrapolation of what might have been. I love that, through all the trials and even after they've both changed so much, Bill and Laura's love shines through like a beacon.

On a less serious note, I can totally see the inspiration for Bill's hair in EJO's current appearance. Thank goddess both the Bill in this story and EJO in real life decided to do away with the stache!

Thank you! As I said above, I had great source material to start a re-imagining of NC that was different from what I'd thought about before.

Maybe someone will write a fic about Bill's years of combat and trying to get home...back to the classical roots of the story.

:-D Yes, EJO's recent appearances in full Santa beard and ponytail was absolutely the inspiration for Returned!Bill! Not only do I favor beards (If you've seen my FB you know why) but in my head that would bring "Bill" closer to a several years' older Bill that what we see in canon.

BTW, EJO ditched the full beard but is hanging onto the stache, which is probably a good choice for him, and seems to be growing his hair out again. I totally support anyone with a great head of hair to let it grow long :-)
