These are from the folk-tale collection The Snow Maiden and the Fox by Alexei Tolstoy published in 1988. The artist is M. Belyaeva, about whom I know nothing. Booksellers provide the richest source of information on shape books. For example: Aleph-Bet Books. Look at them all! And the Library of Congress has high quality images of King Winter here.

I created this community because I needed a journal named Buchschmuck. I won't pester you but it would be very nice if I could suggest a theme now and again and each of us posted an example or two. Otherwise, the community will languish. At the moment, I'm collecting images of vintage 'shape books'.

I decided to start with my favorite pop-up (or 'mechanical book' as it states on the front page): Peter and the Wolf.

The book is fastened with a cloth tie and opens up to create stage-like scenes, with a forest background that opens up on the right and left flaps.
