I know this will be a controversial statement. But I'm starting more and more to think that the greatest rock and roll band of all time might not be The Beatles or The Rolling Stones or Led Zepplin.

It may be The Fucking Who.

I'm still trying to compile my thought process into a coherent thesis. Once I do that there'll be a much bigger post. I can say one of the things influencing my thinking is that, unlike the aforementioned bands, you've never heard another band who sounds like The Who. You can hear any number of bands and say they sound like the Beatles or the Stones or Zep, but you've never said that a band sounds like The Who. They've proven to be inimitable.

Valid point - however as much as I love the Who, I don't see them expanding their range/exploring other musical options as much as the Beatles or the Stones did.

Well, look at the jumps they made from "My Generation" to Tommy to Who's Next. That's an incredible progression.

I still thinks the Beatles are on top, just because everyone knows a beatles song, and the fact that they have in-utero beatles music CDs, which means that from before birth you knew the beatles.

With 37 different CSI shows, each using a Who song for their intro, I'd say most of the planet now knows a Who song.

Im with you, The Who is the Greatest Rock band ever. I dont consider the Beatles as Rock, nothing about them screams rock. They never had the guitar driven stuff that Pete threw out there. Now John Lennon may be the most important figure in the history of Rock music, but to me the Beatles were always middle of the road for me. For me they come in 4th of the big four. For me its The Who, Stones, Zep, and then the Beatles

Then again, Eddie Vedder is one of my music gods, so yeah Im gonna be partial to The Who
