Musings while watching Watchmen...

Is it possible for something to be really, really good, and yet simultaneously disappoint you?

Apparently it is, because that's how I'm feeling after seeing WatchmenLet me say this up front: this was about as good a translation from the book to the screen that you could ask for. Had this burst forth from the forehead of Zach Snyder without any ( Read more... )

I noticed, of course, but I didn't mind a bit. I loved the movie. It did it's own thing in parts, as a film should. It's not the novel, after all. I loved it, and wasn't a bit disappointed.

And having not seen it yet *sunday... oh god sunday get here soon* yours is not the first opinion that has rang with that same sentiment.

It's goign to really come down to the fact that Watchmen is not a book most people who enjoy comics has read 'once.. when they were bored'. It's almost like a rite of f'n comic passage with how complex it is.

So to take a book that so many people have not just read, but re-read, analyzed, read analysis's of. Read script samplings of. Read annotations of... etc. and try and have the movie feel perfect - is damn near impossible.

If the movie can transport you to that faux time period. If it can tell the story(ies) without dumbing it down. I'll be ok with it, but even with the understanding that you said.. it's a VERY GOOD movie.. those of us who have committed a decent amount of time to it as a book, were NEVER going to be perfectly sated.

True. Like I said, it was as good a movie adaptation as could possibly be done. And I still think it was an excellent movie. But if someone doesn't like it I can't argue with them.

Do you think the extended DVD with more material will make a difference?

I doubt it. I've yet to encounter extended material that would do the kind of depth he's talking about, any justice.

I watched it yesterday and, as someone who had intentionally avoided the novel for the last year, I enjoyed it greatly (except for the constant flopping of the giant blue penis). Now I will read the book and perhaps be retro-disappointed.

You know what? The full frontal didn't bother me in the least. I noticed it the first time, thought to myself, "OK, they rolled with it", and honetly didn't even think about it the rest of the film.

Having just read Watchmen for the first time just last week, I have to agree with your take on the movie. It was a great movie. A story you could fully get into even if you weren't familiar with the characters beforehand.

It was missing something though. Adding more to the movie wouldn't have helped a theater setting due to it already being 2 hours and 45 minutes long, but it still feels like something was missing to keep it from being a "perfect comic movie" like so many (myself included) hailed Iron Man and Dark Knight to be last summer. Of course I am absolutely salivating at the idea of the DVD release with the pirate comic.

Anyway, now on to Wolverine- Origins in May.
