They just had one of these somewhere around here. The tagline on the news read: "Would you promise your virginity to your father?" It was all very awkward.
I think that's the part that bothers me most. If you don't want to have sex, that's perfectly fine. If you go about making a big deal and signing a pledge, it's a little over the top. If you pledge your virginity to your father... we've kind of crossed the line into creepy.
I'm not surprised: a lot of people I knew from pre-IWU days would have gone to those had there been one! Prom was, after all, "debauchery." A girl I knew growing up just got married last summer. Nothing unusual there--but her family wouldn't let her kiss or hold hands with a guy until they were engaged. Their engagement period was a year--to ensure that there were serious about each other. She was ok with all of this, believing that all this is "what God commands," according to conservative Christian beliefs. However, this same girl is also the first friend I know who is having babies--exactly 9 months after marriage ;-)
