Smash Mouth has always been my carefree, driving down the highway when its sunny with the wondows down music. When I've told my friends I listen to Smash Mouth they scoff. But I think everyone needs their music that is meant for nothing more than having fun.
I will always love almost everything that came out of the '90s. The stuff that was considered "cool" and the stuff that was considered "awful" I still listen to the spice girls :\
90s music is not all that bad...you should stop listening to maria hey! i love 90s music, including a lot of early- to mid-90s alternative. just not as much grunge as some folks :-) but need i point out most of the cds i own came out before 2000? will there ever be another luscious jackson? the future looks doubtful.
much of 90's rock is alright. just like "70's rock" or "Teh Sixties" etc., though, you have to specify which Nineties you're talking about: early, Hammer/KrissKross/C+C Music Factory/2Unlimited/10,000 Maniacs Nineties? Grungy alternarock Ace of Base/Alannis/LaBouche Nineties? Second wave grunge Nineties? Britney/NSync/Slim Shady late Nineties?
I heard "Ordinary World" at Nanny's last night. I still f'ing hate that song. Same for that Blind Melon song.
And there are certain bands I hate now in a way I never did then.
And there are bands I never loved and will never love (Duncan Sheik, DMB, Hanson).
As for Cake and Smash Mouth, I think your memory is off. Everyone LOVED those two at the time, and lots of people still do. I am the only person I've ever met who think both are insipid and banal.
