The next time I see someone using "diety" instead of "deity" I AM GOING TO REACH THROUGH THE INTERNET AND PUNCH THEM IN THE THROAT.

The word is from Latin and Sanskrit roots, "i before e except after c" does not apply.

Yep, there are weird exceptions to every rule! ..."Weird" being one of them, naturally.

TBH it has so many exceptions it barely qualifies as a rule... I just have to rely on my reading history and my visual word recognition to judge if they're the right way round in a word.
