Mei knew Jacob very well. It was true he started sniffling on Saturday evening, but it had blown out into a full head cold by Sunday and he cooped himself in his room to avoid spreading his germs. Well, he would like to think he was being considerate, but it was also because if he tried to stand for long periods of time, he was afraid he'd pass out. After all, the congestion in his head not only affected his nose but also his ears and generally every other part it could get to, and it affected his sense of balance and his hearing. Everyone didn't need a sound proof room to get away from Jacob Caldwell. All they needed was to give him the common cold ( ... )

Mei didn't really know the extent of the havoc that colds reaped on Jacob, perhaps because he had never had the patience to explain things so simply, but she had been around for a number of other colds, and they all left Jacob in reasonably the same state. Helpless. Which obviously made it her duty take care of him, considering he was her best friend. He was hardly a burden; tending to whatever he needed was the least she could do. She would have had to disagree though. Who in their right mind would want to get away from him? The only person she could think of was that terrible Landon boy, but even he must have had a hard time resisting the irresistible Jacob ( ... )

Jacob had patience to explain to Mei about his hearing. He merely didn't because the more he got into it, the more technical it would sound and it became harder to explain since he didn't know the Chinese words to translate. Besides, he didn't like to talk about himself and though Mei was his best friend, he would rather talk about her, their classes, their friends, and everything else first. She knew he could hear and could mimic voices, and that was the general gist, right ( ... )

Why of course he was irresistible! He had many, many friends! More than she did; that much she was sure of. Secretly, she sometimes wished that he wasn't quite so lovable. With all the friends he had, Mei was certain that any of them would assume the role of best friend if he one day decided that being her friend was much too difficult. And really, she wouldn't have blamed him; he had to help her with almost everything and that must have been such a pain in the bottom. That sort of burden gets old rather quickly and they had been friends for two years already; one could only speculate when it would be too much for him ( ... )
