I was thinking about this the other day, and I always wonder about how people use their computers. I have two computers I use frequently, my personal computer I have the list on the left, my work computer I have the list on the right. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the OS on them or not, since they're different.

(I don't use a chat client except very infrequently gmail's chat, which inherently has it on the left.)

Yeah, the gmail's chat could really either fall into the left, or the center/full choice. One thing that's always interesting about polls, is that you get to see how people interpret questions/answers.

If I was to answer, having only used gmail chat, I'd say left, cause its on the left side of the main workspace. :)

Eh, I disagree. Because it depends on where I have my browser, if it's even open. Often when I'm chatting I have my browser minimized while I'm multitasking, and when open for replying, the browser isn't full-size and therefore isn't necessarily on the left, it's wherever it's convenient at the at moment, depending on what else I'm doing. So I stick with my answer of Other.

I have it on the right at home, and on the left at work. Home - XP laptop. Work - vista laptop.

I wish LJ let you do polls useful for correlation, cause then you could see if people considered their work or home their primary, and if the OS made a difference. I think the reason my work has it on the right is because XP defaults their desktop icons to the left, and I want to be able to see them. But at home, I have it on the left on a mac, which defaults its desktop icons to the right.

Well, I really didn't expect anyone to choose bottom or top, but I had to include them as to not alienate anyone's choice. I'm not actually sure how bottom/top would work, given all of the IM clients that I'm aware of. :) I would say your choice of right is the correct one for your situation. :)
