Hissss!

I was in my front yard chatting to a neighbour when I saw a baby snake (40 -50 cm long)! It was black so no doubt is rather poisonous - tiger snake or brown snake probably. I went to phone the council to send someone around to pick it up but they wouldn't come unless it was still in the same spot. Alas it had moved. They gave me the numbers of ( Read more... )

yikes!

i'd still get the guys out... i've heard there's been quite a few brown snakes around recently and they can be very nasty.

Yeah I think I will for peace of mind; although it show that snakey friends can appear at any time. Yes brown snakes are the most poisonous of all aren't they? I never mastered the finer art of telling them apart. Tiger snakes can be quite aggressive though. Apparantly the council had received 3 calls that day for snakes. I wouldn't be surprised if the drought had something to do with it. Now the Australian cock roaches are kicking out their dirtier foreign counterparts from our houses due to the dry and indeed I spotted one beneath our kitchen sink the other day. We have never had cockroaches in Melbourne before! Seeing as though the Aussie cockroach (with yellow stripe) is clean it is not such a terrible thing... the snake was near some grey water that B hadn't finished putting on the plants so that may have had something to do with it.

i think taipans are more poisonous, but it wouldn't make much difference if it bite one of the little ones... brown snakes are still very deadly. it would be good to know what kind of snake you're dealing with, just in case there are more around and someone does get biten and they need anti-venom.

there have always been snakes on my family's farm outside gympie but they were saying that it's been particularly bad with the dry weather - and my relatives are significantly more "rural" than i am, i took their word for it.

the person i'm staying with said exactly the same thing a few days ago about the cockroaches. i quote "melbourne now has cockroaches - i found one in the cupboard". i responded with "i'm sure some of my old flats had cockroaches" to which she replied "well, kew has never had cockroaches before". :)

Oooh! Do you have parkland nearby? Or has something such as the recent rain displaced the snake a bit? We're out in the sticks and I still recall a few years back when I was teaching - it was the day before the students started for the year and we saw a beautiful brown snake slinking about the place. It eventually went down one of the grills and into the drainage system. Needless to say I spent the next week peering into each drain as I went past them in case our slithery friend was lurking somewhere down there. I hope your snake finds that the grass is greener on the other side and takes him/herself off in that direction.

We are only 3 houses away to the paddocks that run clear to the You Yangs. The worst spot for snakes is supposed to be by the river.

I remember after a day teaching I spotted a scorpion on my classroom floor! We didn't see it again though.

I despise snakes more than anything else on this planet I think. Not a great friend of rats or cockroaches either, but snakes are just revolting.

It would be good to find out exactly WHAT the regulations of Council are in regards to snakes .. coming only if the snake is in the same spot seems a little ridiculous to me, and surely can't be their guidelines!?

Good luck! (And we should catch up soon - in a snake-free place) :)

Yeah and in relation to the council, it would seem that their policy is to fob you to the private snake wranglers. Another drought beastie gone beserk is the wasp and my friend discovered a wasp nest is her backyard and received the same treatment and is still waiting for someone to remove the bloody thing... but her boy has already fallen prey to a multiple attack!
