i've spent hours this afternoon requesting information from various colleges and emailing admissions departments with specific requests for information about studying sustainable agriculture at said institution. the university of vermont fails in new and exciting ways. my email, their reply, and my subsequent reply all follow.

I think you would have thought of this, but there's likely one person reading all the e-mails they receive, and unless you have a specific person's e-mail I think that they automatically send back their generic one. Will writing an e-mail back like that really get them anything but annoyed?

why would you have a generic email that assumes that people are too stupid to send you the information you need? even if it is generic, it's not a good idea. plus, there's nothing to distinguish a generic or automated response from one supposedly written by a person who read your email... unless the email specifies that it is an automated response. i got a few automated responses... that's fine, at least i know that my email got to those places. i've received helpful responses from most of the admissions people already. the one from uvm was "signed" by a person and there was no indication that it was an automated response... so i think i'm well within my rights to be annoyed. if they're annoyed, they should re-think their email processing, especially if they want applicants to feel like they are worth it to the school.

maybe they just have a generic email if at least one item is missing...in this case, your bday.

frankly, that still doesn't make sense. it doesn't recognize me as an individual who has specific questions and concerns about possibly attending uvm. the fact that i got that reply at all indicates to me that my letter was not read and considered individually. the admissions department is in public relations and customer service, and they have the all-important task of representing the college well to prospective students. uvm's representation is not impressing me.

dude adrienne, if you are at all interested in going to uvm you probably shouldn't have been so snappy, even if they weren't helpful to you.
just a thought.
