"It's alright, let's go," Charlie said as he stood from the bench. "I can finish this on the way," he explained, alluding to the half-sandwich that was still in his hand. He grabbed his bag and followed her to the inn. The receptionist was an old, round-faced wizard with a long, white beard and round spectacles. He strangely reminded Charlie of Dumbledore - or rather, of a version of Dumbledore who would have been through one of these magnifying mirrors like the one his dad had once bought from a Muggle. Arthur had brought it back to the Burrow, causing Molly to yell for several hours. In the end, his dad had hidden the mirror in a place only Charlie knew about, but he had to promise he would not reveal anything about it to his mother, even under torture ( ... )

They walked up the wooden stairs to the rooms as Patricia juggled her bags in her hands. Their rooms were placed side by side and she turned to look at Charlie. "Give me a few minutes to change, if you can." She didn't want to be walking through a forest in her good Ministry robes. Charlie nodded and quickly disappeared into his own room. She turned toward the door, huffing as she struggled to turn the knob without dropping her things. Finally she managed to pry it open, wishing she were more adept at wandless magic. She threw her things on the narrow mattress and changed quickly, pulling on a pair of comfortable trainers and her older, yet still formal, Ministry robes. Brushing her hair up into a ponytail, she grabbed her wand and files and left her room, locking it securely before knocking loudly on Charlie's door.

"Remember," she said loud enough for him to hear on the other side. "Delicate timetable, Mr. Weasley!"

Standing at the other end of the corridor, Charlie smiled as he saw Patricia knock on his door. He had already been ready for a moment, and had been waiting for her to show up... but he wasn't surprised to find that she expected him to be late. That woman had never worked with dragons, and it showed. Timing is one of the things you have to be a master of when you try not to get burnt by a dragon; it takes a precise amount of time for a dragon's lungs to accumulate enough gas to produce a flame; and any good dragon keeper knows not to be late in avoiding the next breathing out. But then again, this was probably not the type of things you learnt when you worked in a Ministry, Charlie supposed.

"That poor door is innocent, no need to hit it like that," said Charlie, who had approached and was now standing right behind Patricia. "Since you're ready, shall we go?"

He tilted his head, amused at her puzzled expression. No doubt she thinks I apparated without making any noise, he thought briefly. Well, at least this would mean that she ( ... )

He had startled her, popping up behind her that way, and she was flushed with annoyance because of it. Smoothing down her robes, she lifted her chin. "We can go," she said. They began to walk toward the entrance of the inn. They would have to apparate outside the perimeter of the forest and walk their way inside. El Bosque Oscuro, she thought, The Dark Forest.

It wasn't a pleasant name, and if it were anything like the Forbidden Forest, she wasn't going to enjoy it one bit. "You really shouldn't sneak up on people like that," she scolded Charlie lightly as they made their way outside into the village streets. "I could have hexed you, you know."

"Oh, I'm sure you could," he said as they left the hotel. "You've been dreaming of hexing me since the minute you first saw me, haven't you?" He chuckled. "But it wouldn't be too professional. Besides, now that I'm here, I may be of some use, you know. If those paintings at the inn were anything to go by... Ever seen a Graphorn? I heard there are still some living in that forest. Mind you, no matter how I'd love to see a real one, I'm not sure I'd want to meet it in that kind of setting. I'm guessing it'd take more than the two of us to face that kind of animals ( ... )
