I'm proud of you for turning to God in your time of need--even if it's quiet at first.
One of the stories that comforts me is the story of Hannah, who went to the Temple grieving because she couldn't have children and her husband's other wife was tormenting her relentlessly. After realizing she wasn't drunk, but upset, the priest was very gentle with her and prayed for her. My favorite line comes later, "the Lord remembered her." (1 Sam 1:19) She wasn't praying to be holy or religious; she was praying for a baby. And in that process, she met God as well.
Be persistent. God will hear you. Maybe you have things to repent of, but he's used to that; we all have things to feel ashamed of. He will still hear you. That's what Jesus was for.
