So, we planted vegetable seedlings two weeks ago, and most of them have doubled in size. The exceptions are the eggplants (which like even hotter weather) and some of the peppers (which also like hotter weather). We have blooms on our tomatillo and sungolds already, and it's all so exciting ( Read more... )

it's a nursery/horticulture secret: always buy the smallest plant possible (so long as it is not sick or root-bound). In a short period of time you won't be able to tell the difference between a tiny 'plug' and a plant from a 5 gallon pot. Plants are more able to adapt to transplanting when they are small, and large plants have spent too long in the pot.

I actually planted some seeds (the most frost hardy veggies) this week. It's unheard of to start gardening in Vermont in March but I figure, why not... it may not get all that cold again and they were two year old seeds anyway. We'll see...
