Nearly famous

Quoted in the Prophet. Figured this job would get me places sooner or later. Next stop, the WWN and my own radio interview show. Anyone wanting to get that article signed can pop by Quality Quidditch Supplies. I've got the day shift, and they've got me running about ragged on weekends, so figure on me being at the shop no matter when or where ( Read more... )

Cleansweep’s aren’t that great. I mean, just my personal opinion.

So… you, and the bloke mentioned in the Prophet, are one and the same, eh? That article was nice, the scores however... nicer. Losing, well.. That’s what losers say. I happen to believe winning builds more.

You must be joking! The Cleansweep! I mean, it's a classic! One of the first specifically designed for sport. Sleek lines, design hasn't really changed in ages, but they're solid as rocks, and you can fly them ragged.

What do you run, then?

Don't suppose you've ever ridden on a Nimbus or a Firebolt? Stop by the shop. You can have a taste of how the professionals ride.

You're just baiting me, right? I'm taking things as the Chudley fans do. One match at a time.

Suppose I don’t go for the ‘classics’ then… because I don’t see it. Even if they are durable, that doesn’t make them one of the better ones.

And, I have a Comet Two Sixty. Not that that is any better than a Cleansweep, but better for me.

No I haven’t indulged with either, really. I’ve seen them up close and all, but haven’t flown one. Unfortunately I’m not such hot stuff on a broom, so I’ve never desired a better one than my old stick. I mean I can fly, and decent enough to not make an arse out of myself, but nothing fancy like a ‘professional’.

Ah, but maybe…. Maybe I’ll come by and see Mr. Smales from the paper. That might make it worth more than a broom try. I am not teasing to be mean, by the way. In fact I’m grinning as I write this. So don’t worry.

See, that's the brilliance of older brooms! They're not the best. They don't have the smoothest rides or the swiftest naught to seventy. The Cleansweep 3 bucks like a mad thing if you try to press it past top speed. And the feeling that the broom's about to fall apart at any moment!

Comets are quite popular at the moment. We can barely keep up with demand. Think it's because so many folks want to upgrade their brooms after the war.

Figured as much. Wouldn't be disinclined to meeting a new customer at the shop, actually. Doesn't matter if you can't afford anything more than a team pin, either.

Welcome to celebrity, Mr. Smales.

A new Nimbus, huh? I'll have to drop by to take a look. My first broom was a Nimbus. Good ride, though, I can't imagine anything tempting me away from my Firebolt.

Nothing wrong with a Cleansweep either. I'm a firm believer in the talent lying in the rider rather than the broom. I've caught plenty of Snitches on a Cleansweep back in first year, and it wasn't that many, but still.

Keep up the good work down there.

Figure on different levels of celebrity, Mr Potter. I'm still leagues from "Wanted by the Ministry for Crimes Innumerable". And you, of course. That's a level of fame few can aspire to, right? Always figured you'd want to quietly fade into the woodwork. Your job's done. Time for the next young upstart to take your place.

Still a Nimbus fan? You'd go spare over their newest model. The 2012's been a steady seller. Brilliant improvement over the previous incarnation, and if you haven't been on one since the 2000, well, you're in for a treat.

You've got a good eye for brooms. I like that. Ever think of opening a Quidditch shop?

There's a fine line between the types of celebrity someone can have, Mr. Smales. Trust me on that. And a much bigger gap between wanting to fade away and not being able to. If only my job were done.

I am a Nimbus fan and I'll have to try out that 2012. Though, me and the Firebolt have been through quite a bit. But doesn't hurt to take a look, now does it? Maybe someday soon I'll come by that shoppe of yours.

Thank you. It's more that they seem to have an eye for me, but I can't complain.

Open a shop? I don't have much of a mind for business, Mr. Smales. Then again, I wouldn't exactly have to be the one running it. I'll have to think on that one. Though I wouldn't want to compete with your business down at QQS. you blokes do a brilliant job as it is.

You ought to know much about the subject. Probably more than anyone else in Wizarding Britain. And probably abroad, as well. Never thought I'd see the day when you'd show up in my journal, and yet here you are. Something good can be said about that, Mr. Potter.

Heard tell from certain customers that you were quite a fair Seeker at Hogwarts. Got a soft spot for that position. Played in it myself. You know Quidditch and Hufflepuffs, though. Never quite got that Cup. Seems our lot to take up the back.

A bit of competition is healthy. The heart of sport is competition, isn't it? It'd help the management figure out new things to bring more into the shop.
