Balancing on one wounded wing...

Today was shite. For several reasons, but it was mainly all started off by me reading about the horrific bush fires in Victoria, Australia, which started over the weekend, on the front page of the paper this morning ( Read more... )

I think we all walked around in shock after 9/11; the crushing realization of the suffering and loss was so much to bear. It is good to reflect on those we love and let them know.

Best of luck on the job interview.

It is so fucking sad. We saw an older couple on the news the other day who had found each other, and she'd thought she lost him, and fuck. *hugs* I wonder if we will be doing a collection at Oxfam?

xxxx

P.S. HUGE good luck vibes to you!

I'm having trouble understanding how something like this could have happened. How so many people could be killed by a fire out in the open. Was there no warning? Was the wind so unpredictable, were there gas tanks exploding? It's awful but I just don't understand how this could have happened.

Erin, I totally empathize. As you know, I get affected deeply by horrible events like this that I hear about in the news. And now, since media is 24/7, we have access to information about awful things literally non-stop, which makes it all that much harder to deal with.

It is definitely important to tell our loved ones that we care about them, as often as we can. My parents and I say "I love you" at the end of every phone conversation.

I hope your interview goes well.

Thanks for the empathy, sweetie. :) As I said in my OP, I don't often get this emotional and upset about things I read in the news. The last time I was so horribly affected by something like this was on 9/11, back when I was 16. So, it really shocked me that I cried so much upon reading the papers! But...I guess in some way it's good to know that I'm not becoming completely desensitised to big things like this that happen in the world, especially right in my backyard. That's one other negative affect of 24/7 media...after a while, you can just become numb to it all ( ... )

It's been so horrible hearing about all this. American news never covers things happening in Australia so when I saw a headline in the New York Times about the fires I felt my stomach drop out - you know it is BAD if it makes the front page. This would be sad no matter what, but it feels terrible knowing this is happening in a place that I love so much.

I was thinking the same thing! We never hear about Australia unless it's about Steve Irwin or some goofy human interest story. And only weeks after I buy my plane ticket, too. It's weird.
