Another, broader request

I am definitely still looking for undergrad-friendly pieces on the following topics:
  • activism/political change (including "how to")
  • the ways in which individuals construct and reconstruct racial categories and systems
  • sexuality/gender & race
  • race & criminal justice
  • race & employment
Academic articles are good (if not TOO dense), but I also welcome well- ( Read more... )

race, help me lj you're my only hope, academia, teaching

Michael Walzer's Obligations has some good stuff on the philosophy of civil disobedience and resistance to immoral authority, which sounds vaguely related to what you're doing.

Or there is always the comic subtly alluded to by the userpic. And Thompson's work, like Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, though extracting significance from that is probably not the most rewarding use of class time.

Honestly, I haven't personally delved too deeply into this site, but it's one of the references for the diversity dialogue groups where I work. It might be a little too heavy on the science and lighter on the social, but I thought you might want to give it a quick look.

Let me see if I can find anything on race and criminal justice from my Crim Law books. I remember professor Kempinen having some great things to say, especially about race and sentencing and presumptions of guilt/innocence -- I wonder if you could just contact him and have him mail you some stuff?

I was also going to recommend the Combahee River Collective Statement. Along with sexuality/gender and race, it's also activism/political change. Bernice Johnson Reagon also has a great piece along similar lines (focusing on activism/political change, but touching on these other issues) called "Coalition Politics: Turning the Century." I have pdfs of both of these if you are interested.

I also like Patricia Hill Collin's _Black Feminist Thought_ & _Black Sexual Politics_. There are some good excerpts floating around out there in various readers and such.

Re: Constructing/Reconstructing Racial Categories, etc - There's got to be a good blog or newspiece analysis centered on Obama's black identity and mixed racial heritage.
