Dwarf Fortress. As far as a description of the game... imagine playing the Sims. But now instead of just playing a family of humans, you're playing a whole fortress full of bearded alcoholics dwarves and instead of dealing with keeping them happy and going to work, you're keeping them drunk happy

I remember seeing this game awhile ago but not having time to get into it much, because the depth really is amazing. I may have to give it another go, though, particularly if you find that it stays fun -- it looked like it could easily turn into a micromanagement game.

I was inspired to attempt to play this again. I'm going through the fairly comprehensive tutorial that Penny Arcade pointed out once upon a time. I'm beginning to get frustrated by the inconsistencies of the user interface, though.

The fan-made wiki has useful information and some nice tutorials.
Dwarf Therapist is an external program that interfaces with dwarf fortress while it's running and lets you look at dwarf job preferences and skills, and mass-assign them labors. Basically essential if you want to manage more than ~20 dwarves.
