Scientists in Korea have used stem cells therapy on a woman who has been a paraplegic for 19 years due to an accident. Not so surprisingly after a mere month her legs and feet were responding to stimuli.

i am so so so so so so torn on stem cells. i know they have so much potential to do good and i HEART science but i'm scared to think that maybe people will start farming and selling embryos (aka potential babies) and being all sketchy about it. i just don't trust our government to regulate it well.

Every system has the potential for abuse, but I don't see that as a reason to halt progress. People are very sketchy with organ transplant (black market, having babies for marrow, etc, etc) but that doesn't mean we should not do transplants and let those in need of one die. The ethical concerns are very real, but no matter how long we discuss and rant in the end, the system we design will be open to abuse. All systems are flawed, that's just a fact. So you build the best one given what you can see now and patch it later when someone turns out to be smarter than you.

Fortunately some of this research is still allowed. This specific study was done with blood from an umbilical cord which is legal in the US. The progress will happen and I'm sure whatever the rules become they will be abused.

Mostly I get upset because all I see is the current administration stiffling science on every front. Fortunately there are still enough good guys to keep us progressing.
