look at you, Bob the Builder! The situation in the orphanage sounds a lot like how it was in the 19th century in the U.S. and Europe. Actually it was common in the Depression, too. Orphanages sort of functioned as a safety net when parents (often single mothers) could no longer support their children. Of course, it's a totally backward way to handle the problem (better and cheaper all around if we find ways to feed kids who are with their parents rather than feed/clothe/board them away from their families).
But more important--you are awesome. I am in awe of how you have made the most of a tough situation and how you are making the lives of so many around you better.
OMG -- one of my previous colleagues at LaGcc is a poet, and adopted by Americans -- she is of Korean parentage. Her life long research--to find her birth family in Korea. Turns out, 40ish years ago, families would put kids up for adoption if they could not afford . . . etc. She just found out that she was stolen from her single un-wed mother by a great aunt, who put her up for adoption. This is after her birth mother told her the story several weeks ago in Korea, after a long search and DNA testing. My friend teaches and lives in Minnesota. She also found out that her younger brother (the dad and mom had another baby!) emigrated to the U.S. and now lives in Minnesota!
