Tonight is our last night in Seoul. I'll try to post a bit more about it once I'm home and able to. It will be a week for now, though, because as soon as I return to the UK I've got to drive to Bath with a fellow student for a week-long residential course at the University there ( Read more... )

I have a hard time imagining the words 'bean' and 'popsicle' going together. Hope y'all have a good flight home.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking this. Bad enough that bean brownie recipe I saw a couple of years back. But frozen beans? MUNG beans, no less? I boggle at the thought.

If you look on the label of your ice cream you are likely to find guar gum, guar is a tiny pink bean not unlike mung beans They are both very like the seeds of okra, Interesting if you like okra otherwise a triple bleh, If you ever need a benign thickener you now have 3 substitutes for arrowroot.

I worked in the health food industry for years and never once suspected that guar was a bean- I always thought it was a seaweed-derived thickener! Fascinating that both mung beans and guar beans have that cool mucilaginous thickening property. Do they use okra as a thickener for non-gumboish dishes, or is it not benign enough? (I've never tried okra, but so many people furrow their brows at the mere mention of it that I suspect even the seeds must have a strong taste.)

Seoul sounds like a really cool place, brown air notwithstanding. The people sound truly friendly and helpful. I can't wait for pictures, if any are forthcoming.

A midnight flight? Arrgh. Hope it was as uneventful and speedy as possible. And thanks a million for the great postcard! My Wall o' Imaginary Friends' International Travel board was indeed sorely lacking in exotic Asian destinations, so there's that sorted! So distinctive is your writing that when the postcard was gleefully waved at me, writing side up, from a distance of several feet, I was able to identify it immediately. Thanks for thinking of me!

The trip back sucked mightily, clocking in at 30ish hours in total (including layover time, which I do, because it was spent being uncomfortable and attempting to sleep in a freezing corner of the airport in Dubai, gah), and culminating in the discovery of the loss of our train tickets from London to our town. Oh, and an exciting time at immigration, but that was my own fault. I'll write about it a little later.

I'm glad you liked the postcard!

The chain is called Paris Baguette. Any sort of Western-style bakery in the city had a French theme in the name, and this was a popular chain there with loads of locations. It was an easy place to get some rolls, muffins, or sandwiches to go.
