in Germany

We're just winding down our weekend trip to Germany. We took the train from wtfborough, which took... quite a while, even with the in-laws picking us up across the border in Belgium. We did get to experience the Eurostar train, however, which I am glad of. I can't say it was the best train, especially by continental European standards, as it was ( Read more... )

Oh for a German Christmas market! My mum had several of those revolving nativity scenes, or whatever they are called. The candles turn the windmill thing and they all move around. Brings back memories.

I'm trying to find German stuff here, but don't know where to start. I did find some gingerbread cookies, that are very much like Lebkuchen, but I do miss the ones with rice paper on the back.

And I would travel all the way to Germany just to taste a real bradwurst from a street seller again. They are real sausages not the plastic frankfurters you get in other countries...

Luckily for us, both Lidl and Aldi (value supermarkets based in Germany) have locations near where we live. When we first moved here, I noticed local Brits were highly skeptical of them, and regarded the products as inferior to the more expensive, British alternative at Sainsburys or whatever. However, the economy has forced people into trying new things, and one of the national newspapers just did a leading story on Sunday essentially saying how much more value for money you get from an Aldi store brand product versus the equivalent at a typical store.

I'm babbling, I know, but your sausage comment reminded me of it. Cookieman will only buy bratwurst at Aldi here. For some reason, UK producers are allowed to call things sausages which only feature 50% meat. mm meaty bread!

We found some jars of rotkohl today at Lidl, along with some other German favourites. He's a happy boy now.

Sounds like a great trip :) This Thursday we are going to visit a Christmas market in a cave near the German/Belgium border here in The Netherlands. A cave yes! :D

In a cave! Well, at least you can't get rained on. :) Sounds fun!

You went to Bonn. Voluntarily.

Erk.

Yes, I hate the place. Spent some of the worst years of my life there.

How's the sproglet doing?

yeah the youngest brother is living in Bonn now, and it's not too long a drive from where cookieman's parents live. I can't say that I saw much of it, though, as we spent most of our afternoon in the suburb he lives in.

The baby is moving around a lot in there, and according to the midwife, things are progressing well. No news is good news, I suppose. :)

There is a LINDT OUTLET!!! Damn damn damn...that beats my williams sonoma outlet. I'm glad your travels were potty plenty. I can only imagine that will become more and more necessary in the next couple of months.

yes, the Lindt outlet is pretty evil. If you're willing to try random things, you can get some good deals there. They stock all of their current merchandise (so at the moment there are loads of bells, advent calendars, etc) at a slight reduction, but then they also have stock of items which are close to their due date for pretty low prices. Then there are the grab bag type things, either of random bars or of pralines/filled chocolates, and those are shockingly cheap. Not the nicest presentation, but still, Lindt!

I've become obsessed with loos. I'm glad to be back in a country with free public toilets.

This will be the first year in a long time that we won't have traditional German bakery. One day earlier this year, we discovered neorxnawang's favorite bakery had closed, and now we have to settle for second-rate gingerbread and stollen!
