I'm a happy camper today. For a while there it was sounding like we wouldn't be able to get together with family over the holiday because of my husband's limited vacation schedule, but now a plan has come together and a bunch of us are meeting up in Vegas. This month we read a biography of Francis Perkins, FDR's Secretary of Labor. Well, I managed to pick up a free copy of the Origin of Species today. It's the 150th anniversary edition, with an introduction by creationist Ray Comfort. I don't expect the introduction to reach the height of comedy achieved by such creationist tracts as "From Goo to You By Way of the Zoo"*, but maybe I'll be surprised. Lately I've been swimming in the ocean on my lunch breaks. The water is cold and full to varying degrees of kelp and tar. There are usually pelicans nearby. Yesterday the pelicans were flying close enough to give us a good view of their fish-catching plunges. I went to Yosemite last weekend. Sam was taking his first crack at a big wall and I was tagging along, helping carry gear to the base, and enjoying the spectacular day hikes. The first hike was with Sam's climbing partner's gf, up to the top of Yosemite Falls. It was heartening, as we ascended the switchbacks, to see such crowds of people of all ( Read more... ) -

I'm drinking 21 year old pear wine, a wedding gift from a family friend we impulsively opened tonight. It's amazingly good. It's prompting me to reflect on how the people we love affect us, in ways that are obvious and ways we don't notice. Idyllwild this weekend! I'm excited to be getting back out on real rock, it's been a while. Sam needs to get some aid and trad practice in to prep for his big wall trip and I need to climb up on some rocks to practice for climbing on other, more different rocks.
