It’s a bad time to be a knee-jerk anti-green conservative, because it’s become obvious that they’re mostly wrong. We really are facing serious problems which we could have prevented (or at least blunted) with common-sense precautions. So they’re reduced to a sad new form of backlash: criticizing environmentalists for daring to bring it up in the ( Read more... )

I agree a bit, but when it comes to ANWR they really aren't sure how much oil there is. Its most likely only enough to last a year or two, not even worth the cost of building the infrastructure. We aren't going to see any relief at the pumps by getting oil from there ( ... )

Whoops. I didn't mean to imply that "worried about ANWR"="crazy eco-fundamentalist." There are certainly arguments to be made for staying out of ANWR. With the permafrost melting, they'd have a hard time even building the infrastructure there, as I understand it. I guess I just meant that I'm willing to make some concessions, and that not all oil drilling in environmentally sensitive areas should necessarily be 100% off limits. The sad fact is we may need all the different energy solutions we can implement, all at once: conservation, alternate energy, and new sources of conventional energy.

It is very frustrating that so many people just aren't interested in listening to the facts, and aren't willing to change their position even after they hear the facts. If you don't shove it in their faces, they don't listen to you. If you do shove it in their faces, they get defensive, and they don't listen to you. I don't know what to do about it.

Some of it is pride, but I think a lot of it is lack of faith that small actions like eating a salad or turning down the thermostat make a noticeable difference. Also, perhaps lack of faith in our neighbors -- why should I make small sacrifices when the guy next door is going to continue driving his H2, which will easily offset anything I do? You can argue the logical fallacy of that kind of thinking, but it's hard for people to really buy into it ( ... )
