I asked more or less the same question in a different community and got a few replies: http://community.livejournal.com/cancersupport/538727.html

In my brother's case, a great amount of foods are forbidden so I'd check that out before getting products like that. So far I have 3 books, 4 audio cd's, a power animal statue, a pillow and a wall scroll with the kanjis for "healing" on it. His hospital room is really white so I'm trying to offer the possibility of having life-affirming colours and objects around.

yes, I don't plan on getting her much food. I think she has that part figured out. I like the idea of a power animal statue. Where would I look for something like that?

Anywhere, essentially. The whole power animal concept is based on the thought that different animals represent different qualities and characteristics and that in different places in our lives we have different lessons to learn from varying animals. I'm sending my brother a small lion statue to remind him of his inner lion. Just use your intuition. What kind of energy and intention would your mom need right now and what type of animal would represent that to you/her?

Though I'm sure some of these won't be ideal to put in a basket, I'll tell you what made me most comfortable when I was going through surgery/chemo/radiation ( ... )

Thanks for that website link! I love some of the hairpieces. I am buying one right now.

And comedies! My mom mostly likes drammas, but maybe a comedy will help her out. Can you think of anything sophisticated?

You're welcome!

No, I can't think of anything right now. Though, I think one of the best things about comedies is that they aren't sophisticated at all.

Also I just thought of another suggestion. I think it would be really helpful to keep a special calendar or journal just for doctors appointments and medically related stuff. It would help to keep things organized while they're going on and also serve as a trustworthy record in case you need to know past dates later on. I know my doctors ask the dates of past surgeries before a procedure.

I agree with crazyhead up there-a cap to catch hair that falls out in the night is a must. That was one of the most horrible things, waking up with hair in my mouth that had fallen out. I ended up just letting my brother shave my head one rainy Saturday, because I couldn't bear the constant falling out anymore.

However, I liked hats better than scarves. Scarves just made my head look incredibly odd shaped, so get your mom some of each, till she's had a chance to decide which feels/looks better for her.

I used nausea drops a lot-they really helped. They're hard candies made of ginger and other herbals. I got them in a local cancer survivors shop.

I took a portable DVD player with me to the hospital for the chemo-but I was there 8-12 hours a day. I took DVDs of my favorite tv shows and musicals.

Make sure you don't just give her books that are about dealing with cancer though-sometimes it's good to just have something normal to focus on.
