so, the thing with 'manhattan for beads' is that it's about a bad trade. it's about changing a fundamentally pure love into something complicated by sex, and whether or not that's actually the desirable outcome (my general inclination being 'no'). there's the old story (since disproved, i believe) about how the dutch bought the island of manhattan for beads, so that was the 'bad trade' connection. 'frank robinson for milt pappas' is one of the most famous bad trades in mlb history, and that was totally gonna be the title until i realized that, like, four people would get it.
