Nothing Will Do Us Part

Chapter 3:
Pain

Pain was when water gushed down his windpipe and burned his lungs. It was frighteningly painful. He panicked, and trashed around for a bit. His common senses screamed for him to rise to the surface. But he persisted. And forced himself to stay down. He knew he was this close to seeing Xabi again. He cleared his mind of all other thoughts save for meeting Xabi on the other side. He tried to ignore the pain and his impending watery doom. Very soon, he was numb to all pain.

What went through Xabi’s mind when he was in the water? Was he in this much pain as well? What were his last thoughts?

Those were Stevie’s last thoughts before darkness devoured him completely.

Pain was when he slowly started to regain conscious. It came to him gradually. It made it hard to breathe. Along with pain, his senses were also returning. He heard a plea… A familiar voice, one that he had not heard in a long time… A familiar voice was pleading for him not to die. He felt a mouth pressed on his. And oxygen was slowly being transmitted to his brain. His body registered that there was an excess amount of water in his lungs and proceeded to expelling it out.

God, drowning was horrible. He lied back on the sands. He found he could breathe again, with some difficulty. Speaking of God, where was the Almighty? He was in Heaven already, wasn’t he? Or was he in Hell? And most importantly, where was Xabi?

‘Are you alright?’

It was that familiar voice again. A shadow loomed over him and next he felt a gentle hand against his cheek. He opened his eyes and gazed into a pair of soft brown ones. This close, Stevie could make no mistake.

“I’m in heaven.” There was no doubt about it. After four long years, he was finally reunited with his beloved Xabi. Never mind they were in another realm, what mattered most was they were together. He wasted no time in showing Xabi how happy he was to see him again.

Pain was when Xabi shoved him away roughly. His eyes snapped open. He felt lost. Coming from Xabi, this feeling of rejection was new to him. He was confused. There was no reason for Xabi to push him away. He went through so much just to be with him again. The look in Xabi’s eyes terrified him. It was as if the Spaniard didn’t know him at all and that Stevie had done something abominable.

“Xabi?”

Are you Xabi? If you are, why are you treating me like this? Did the angels brainwash you?

And then Xabi fled. And Stevie’s world came crashing onto him. This was no Heaven. This was Hell. This was a nightmare.

“Stevie!”

And Mikey’s distant voice was a call for him to wake from his nightmare. But to wake from this dream would mean facing the cruel reality of Xabi’s death. To stay, however, and watch Xabi run away from him would be torture as well.

Funny how the Xabi in his dream seemed to be able to hear Mikey as well. Stevie saw him stop. Xabi was just standing there. Like he was thinking. Like as if the name meant something to him.

“Stevie!”

Did it? Stevie hung on tightly to that small shard of hope. He stared at the back of Xabi, willing the Spaniard to turn around… to come running back to him… to make this nightmare a sweet dream… to change this Hell into Heaven.

“Stevie!”

I’ll wake in a few seconds, Mikey. I just… need to see if Xabi comes back to me.

He didn’t. He just kept on running.

A few seconds later, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up and stared blankly at Michael, who stared back looking puzzled.

“Stevie? Are you alright? Why’re you all wet? Did you take a swim… with your clothes on?”

Stevie blinked in surprise. Was this not a dream? He searched his memory for any clues that this was not. Drowning. I tried to drown myself. He was quite certain that part was real. The pain he experienced felt so… tangible.

It was the events after that confused him. What was fact and what was fantasy? He covered his face with his hands and curled up onto the sands. Come on, Stevie. Wake up. He wanted to wake from his nightmare now. Go back to the time when Xabi was dead and continue living his aimless life. It was less painful.

“Stevie? You okay? What happened?” Mikey asked softly, shaking Stevie’s shoulder.

He opened his eyes and sat up. He expected to be in a bed in the hotel room, not the beach. He grabbed Mikey and pulled the smaller man in front of him.

“How long were you gone?” He demanded. He desperately needed to know if this was real.

“Um, a couple of minutes. Twenty, I think.” Mikey said, a little stunned by his friend’s strange behaviour. “Why, Stevie?”

“Did you… did you see a man running… down the beach just now?” Stevie held his breath as he waited for Mikey’s reply.

“Yes, yes I did. Did you know him?”

Mikey saw Xabi running too. He wasn’t dreaming. Xabi wasn’t dead. And yet, Stevie didn’t feel any better. He had that one chance to bring Xabi back to him. Xabi was standing right in front of him and all Stevie could do was let him go because he foolishly thought all this was a dream. He choked back a sob.

Pain was when he realised Xabi was lost to him again.
