Lupabitch posted this in her journal a little over a week or so ago. I posted a comment in her journal, but I was also moved to write in more detail in my own journal, it just took me awhile to get around to it. So here it is, the article I'm responding to ( Read more... )

So generally, the article is opinion instead of a factual study. I WOULD like to see a study on this, actually.

My bias sense is tingling on this one. Both from the fact not a single factual study is quoted, just a heap of analagies, and from the fact Carol is an "ex-boss" meaning she is for some reason no longer employed as one.

Granted, I do not know the terms in which she came to be no longer a boss so having that fact may shed some light on the bias if it is detrimental to the article or not.

Even if I wanted to be a father (and I admit that I sometimes feel a slight pang when I think about not carrying on the family name/bloodline), I am certain that I would be a rather /bad/ father. First and foremost of my reasons for that opinion is that the noise babies make (crying/screaming) is something that grates on my ears and nerves horrendously; I have virtually zero tolerance for it; I'm of the 'seen and not heard' school of thought. There's also the fact that I can't understand what they want (or what's wrong) if they can't talk coherently; I have this problem with adults, particularly those who seem to communicate more in 'txtspk' than real English. That might be fine for use on a cellphone, but not in general conversation. Then there's having to make sure they don't get into things they shouldn't when they learn to walk/crawl. And so the list goes on. I have not yet stopped being amazed when people say that they want kids. As of about three days ago I now have a five-day-old baby in the house, and although so far he ( ... )

Well, the same idea is held by the born again crowd that one has to be a christian to have morals. It's possible that the same illogical leap is used to get to the concept where you have to have children for emptathy.

Me, I don't buy it at all. I've known many women with kids who deserved to be stretched out on barbed wire. And I've known many without kids who were the most helpful and generous souls I've ever known. Their is nothing about having kids that instantly turns a person into a saint. And likewise, not wanting to have kids of your own for a variety of reasons does not instantly turn a person into a demon, either.

And ask the lady if she thinks the same way about guys - are we all bastages because we don't want the stink, the screaming, and being stuck in a job/home/mortgage for the rest of our lives? If so, then she's already in the minority because she's written off half the human population just like that.
