I have no trouble believing that DT played Ten that way - smitten - and that CT was oblivious both as herself and as Donna, lol. Seriously, that last cap from Midnight? That's his come hither look. :D
When he says, "Oh, yes you are!" Love that bit too.
DT must not have reallized that the way he was playing Ten was coming across as smitten. Smitten, but not in a schmoopy way. But like I said above, we will never know. So fanwank it remains. Sigh.
I think Russell sees it as essential that every companion and the Doctor have a bit of a kiss of some description. It’s become a law of modern Doctor Who, ‘cause people love a bit of that, don’t they? They love to speculate on what it is… And of course, as usual, it’s not really a kiss, it’s something else. But you know it’s good, isn’t it - it’s fun… shove these things in, sprinkle ‘em in, keep you guessing.
From hereI admit, I find it hard to believe that an actor as technically accomplished as DT would let his face say anything that he didn't want it to. I can't help but think he was in on RTD's original intention to have Ten fall "wham! both hearts" for the S4 companion and decided to keep a little bit of that in there, OR he just decided to play it that way - perhaps because of the way that Ten treated Martha and he felt it was a kinda natural character progression. But as you say, we'll never know. Whatever the case, CT and Donna were completely oblivious

Of course, DT would never admit to playing Ten in such a way, the bum.

It's an awesome cap. Ten never looked at the blonde that way.

The cap is from the end of The Poison Sky, just before the TARDIS whisks them all off to Messaline.
