A couple of months ago, Warner Brothers Home Video seemingly went batshit crazy and discounted a TON of their usually expensive TV on DVD collections. They were easily found in gigantic bins in most of the Big Lots around here and you better believe that I went digging. I found cool stuff like Pinky and the Brain Vol. 1 and 2 but by far the neatest find was Popeye the Sailor: 1933-1938, Vol. 1.
I picked it up for $3 bucks; it normally goes for $45 on Amazon.
The cartoons are ASTOUNDINGLY good. I know quite a few people who, when they see black and white cartoons, their eyes glaze over and they just picture anthropomorphic people whistling and dancing for five minutes, but the Popeye cartoons are brilliant. The animation is as bouncy and eye-catching as you can imagine, and the scripts are laugh out loud funny. The vocal actors add so much extra to their performances, especially to the many muttered asides that Popeye tosses off whenever he's thinking. The music in these Popeye cartoons is jazzy and catchy. They're the perfect cartoons.
I implore you. Watch the following cartoon:

Things that are great:
1. The use of the song "Brotherly Love" at the beginning of the cartoon. It's the song Popeye's singing.
2. When Popeye asks Olive to go to the zoo and she says no, he says "Huh, your loss." really quickly.
3. When Olive smells the flowers and says "What a man!"
4. The song that plays while Swee'Pea rides the leopard at the end of the cartoon is "Hold That Tiger"
5. Popeye's anti-parent rant at the end!
While you watch it, think about this: Little Swee'Pea is Elliot's FAVORITE cartoon ever. I put it on for him once on a lark and the kid was hooked. He asks to watch Popeye almost every day. I love that. When given the choice between a cartoon made in 1932 and the sanitized and safe as a Nerf ball cartoons made for two year olds in 2010, Elliot will request Popeye EVERY time. He has incredibly good taste.
I completely recommend buying the
Popeye the Sailor: 1932-1938, Vol. 1. You can find a lot of Popeye shorts that have fallen into the public domain for cheaper than that volume, but the reproduction quality on the Warner Brothers discs make them worth the trouble.
